Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Council of Elders, has passionately defended the party’s capability to navigate Ghana’s current economic challenges.
The former Foreign Minister urged citizens to “examine their lives and vote wisely.”
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday, November 26, Mr. Owusu-Agyeman acknowledged the hardships faced by Ghanaians but expressed confidence in the leadership of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the party’s agenda for national transformation.
“Emerging from the Covid-19 pandemic, we find ourselves facing numerous problems,” he said, recognizing the economic difficulties particularly impacting urban areas.
“There are challenges that must be addressed. However, one must also consider the overall progress made nationwide, which surpasses the period when we merely had a slogan. People must understand that in any human institution, difficulties are inherent. It’s not always smooth sailing.”
He emphasized the significance of recognizing the broader national progress under the NPP, despite immediate hardships.
“If this nation is making strides—and indeed it is—then people should acknowledge that fact,” he added.
When asked if the NPP admits to the country’s difficult circumstances, Mr. Owusu-Agyeman responded, “Oh yes, there are certain realities we cannot ignore. If you used to buy a ball of kenkey for 3p and now it costs 5p, the change is evident.
“The people are aware. Their eyes are open. They understand that if I am now paying 5p for kenkey, I must consider what else I am receiving in comparison to my own personal development and the nation’s growth.”
The former New Juaben MP argued that while economic difficulties are undeniable, they should be viewed within the context of the government’s long-term vision and initiatives.
Acknowledging these difficulties does not signify avoidance. No, you can’t escape reality. Facts are facts. We must undertake what is necessary to ensure that our children and future generations inherit a country with a vastly improved orientation.”
He expressed confidence in the measures proposed by Dr. Bawumia and the NPP to address the economic crisis, emphasizing the importance of execution and accountability.
“What is outlined, whether in our manifesto or elsewhere, will indeed lead us to a better future if executed effectively, monitored, and guided,” he stated.
The veteran politician further characterized the NPP’s agenda as transformative, aimed at lifting Ghanaians out of poverty and establishing a legacy of national prosperity.
“We are adhering to our mission, and we are committed to doing everything possible to ensure we do not short-change the people of this nation,” he declared.
