Prof. Smart Sarpong has appealed to the various political parties to work harder to avoid a run-off this year.
The Senior Researcher at the Kumasi Technical University on Thursday, November 21, released his latest survey dubbed “Who Wins Election 2024?”
According to his report, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is likely to win the December 7 election by polling 49.1% with his main opponent, former John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress coming behind Bawumia with 45.8%.
The research however indicated that the impending elections can be “won at the first round by ONLY one of the two leading political parties, with the NPP having a higher chance of clinching a first-round victory”.
Prof. Smart Sarpong used a sample size of 99,335 out of over 18 million electoral population size with 4,272 communities taking part in the survey.
According to the electoral laws, a candidate can only be declared President-elect when he polls 50 plus 1 votes, therefore per this survey, if the two main candidates maintain these results, the 2024 election will go into a run-off.
Commenting on his research during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Prof. Smart Sarpong noted that his survey was thoroughly conducted to reflect the reality on the ground, however he advised the candidates to spare the nation from holding a second edition of the presidential election.
“Work hard for us to get a one touch and spare ourselves off the stress”, he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.
